6 Things to Do this Summer

By Allison Kamel

It feels like it was just Christmas a few days ago. In reality, though, we’re wrapping up the 2017 spring semester. Just a few finals to go and then it’ll be summer.

Summer means no stress, freedom, lots of time and eventually boredom. We all hit that point in the summer when we feel like we’ve done all there is to do. With that in mind, here’s a list of things to keep you busy this summer.

  1. Jones Beach concerts
Is it really summer on Long Island if you don’t attend at least one concert at Jones 20160820_190224Beach? The lineup is full of great artists to see. In particular, this year’s BLI Summer Jam has an amazing lineup you don’t want to miss. The June 16 show includes Flo Rida, DNCE, Martin Garrix, Sean Paul, Jason Derulo, Sabrina Carpenter, James Arthur, Noah Cyrus, Nick Tangorra, Tinashe, Max Schneider, Miley Cyrus and Clean Bandit.

  2. Local concerts
Jones Beach concerts can get expensive, so a fun alternative is to find free local concerts. Alive After Five is a great way to hear live music in Patchogue on Thursdays. Nesconset’s gazebo concerts are held every Tuesday and usually feature cover bands. Port Jeff has weekly concerts on Wednesday nights.

  3. Italian Ices
ralphsWhether you prefer Rita’s or Ralph’s (even though Ralph’s is the superior Italian ice), getting Italian ices with friends is the best way to enjoy a hot summer day. A fun alternative to Italian ices is ice cream from Sub-Zero, ice cream made from liquid nitrogen with endless options.

  4. The Adventure Park
For people who like a challenge, The Adventure Park at Long Island is an awesome way to spend the day. Located in Wheatley Heights, the park involves climbing different rope trails and ziplining back to the ground.

  5. Festivals and fairs
Most towns hold some type of food festival or fair during the summer. It is easy to find these on Facebook and websites such as Patch and Newsday. Alternatively, attend music festivals such as Governors Ball, Great South Bay Music Festival and Electric Zoo.

  6. Spend the day in Riverhead
Riverhead is home to the Long Island Aquarium, Tanger Outlets, Splish Splash and good food. No matter your interests, you can find something to do in Riverhead.
