On November 18, volunteers took part in the Sandwich Drive & Delivery event, co-sponsored by Habitat for Humanity and Students Taking an Active Role in Society (STARS) clubs.
The event was initiated last semester when both clubs had the idea to participate in a midnight run in the city, which is a similar event where goods are distributed to homeless individuals all night long.
Volunteers gathered at the cafeteria and helped make around 100 sandwiches and lunch
bags before distributing them to the Patchogue and Port Jefferson communities.
STARS president Joey Caggiano stated, “We have individuals living without a home right here on the Island [and] it’s a great opportunity for students to reflect on all of the basic necessities we take for granted — to put a smile on the face of someone in the local community who is in need.”
Habitat for Humanity Vice President Katherine Escobar, also mentioned that it was a “good way to reach out to the community, to those who are less fortunate than us” and to become more aware of the poverty issue right here on Long Island. As you can see, it was truly rewarding experience and a lot of fun!
