Meet Disney’s newest princess. Moana, voiced by Auli’i Cravalho, is a Hawaiian princess who teams up with the demigod Maui, voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, to save her island. At first, Maui is unsure if he should trust Moana to help save the world but she convinces him that she has the strength and courage to successfully complete their mission. The movie, entitled Moana after the main character, will be released on November 23.
Moana will hold a significant role in the Disney canon. This is the first movie to feature a Polynesian princess. It also does not include a love interest. This means we will hopefully be able to add it to the list of Disney movies that empowers girls to be independent.
The movie is being directed by Ron Clements and John Musker. This duo has directed six Disney animated movies in the past. They’ve also directed The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Princess and the Frog. Moana will be the first of their projects to be mainly computer animated.
The cast, aside from The Rock, includes Nicole Scherzinger and Phillippa Soo. Soo has gained fame for playing Elizabeth Schuyler in the Broadway musical Hamilton. She is joined in this project by the creator of Hamilton, Lin Manuel Miranda. Miranda was involved in creating the soundtrack for Moana. The soundtrack will include Dwayne Johnson singing, as well an end-credits song sung by Alessia Cara.
